What is Magick?

"Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will." (Crowley)

On some level, we are each of us magicians, since everyone is engaged in the process of making things come to pass by power of will and clarity of focus. However, some do it better than others employing ritual and esoteric knowledge so as to minimise the need for hands-on involvement in material manifestation.

More... The use of certain equipment and techniques and the awareness of subtle realities characterise the craft, which has proved its worth by being able to survive thousands of years of persecution.

There are equivalents in any religion or system of knowledge to match the wands, staffs, cauldrons and athames or the dramatic spells, incantations and protections of the witch or magician. Yet few paths hold as much fascination and are as profoundly misunderstood as this one. It is a path of sacredness and beauty that leads the practitioner to realise a closer relationship with the Source.

Our Process

Ideally, each member of the group will keep a state of heightened awareness throughout the camp.

We will approach the whole event as sacred and integral, with everyone included in everything, camping together, eating and cooking together and working together on the course material, which will be in alignment with 7 Words concepts. It's important to arrive in good time so as to be ready for the opening ceremony, at 8.30 Monday evening.

The first day will be more oriented towards left brain activities, the second more right brain and third will challenge us to integrate these in perfect balance during the ritual which represents the camp’s climax.

A closing ceremony will be held at 10 on Friday morning. Participants are asked to attend the whole time, and refrain from using alcohol, drugs and mobile phones throughout.

The Teachings

We will assume that some participants may have little or no practical experience and require some guidance on all points, yet some theoretical background knowledge is assumed and realistically we have to say that the development of intuition and self-expression are enhanced when some instructions are given by example only.

More... The specific material offered will not be pre-ordained and will arise according to inspiration and appropriateness. Very likely it will fall into certain categories such as creating and empowering artifacts (wands, staffs etc) healing devices (crystals, herbs etc) divinatory media (tarot, runes etc) and achieving states (ceremony, ritual etc), of course we will also work with elemental forces, incantation, spells and protections.

Those familiar with Druidry, Wicca and British paganism will probably feel at home with the general atmosphere, although we make no claims to represent a given line.

Students

The ideal student will be a responsible adult with a clear mind, strong will and ability to resist extreme emotionality except as a passion for the work. Previous experience in meditation and growth processes may be helpful, whereas preconceptions and expectations may not.

Magicians

Qualities of a Magician?

Typically the competent practitioner of magick will have developed considerable respect within their circle of acquaintances by having clear ideas about things and, by speaking honest and true. They’ll have demonstrated the ability to overcome lethargy and learn how to be disciplined and show application in all that they take seriously.

More... The practitioner probably has skills beyond the average person in a range of things esoteric, although, far more importantly, has the ability to impress and persuade. Sparkling wit and keen intelligence are not unlikely, yet nor are they required. What is required is the readiness to acknowledge that things are not always as they appear. Playfulness and occasional mischief are to be considered normal.

These children of Hermes are lovers! They love to study the mysteries, they love to be in nature, they love to love, and they love life. So clearly full-blooded and passionate, their eyes shine with vitality and often wry amusement.

And rarely is one found to be other than self-possessed of the strength of character that exudes confidence and inspires trust. Often they stand against a tide of confusion, with a voice that commands and inspires.

Therefore they are well disposed to be leaders within their community – for all the above reasons. Not all magicians wear robes and tote wands; some make do with suits and pens. Shape-shifting is par for the course, and discretion has its own advantages.

Each lives by a code. Though the values may differ from one to another, the need for a firm set of rules is sacred. Without this, how could one keep a clear conscience? And without this, self-confidence could so easily degenerate into hubris.

For all their competence, dignity and diligence, when the moment comes, the adept throws caution to the wind and launches off into the unknown with a sense of daring worthy of a warrior. Trust and detachment are two wings of a soaring heart!

Why now?

Astrologers having even a passing familiarity with horoscope interpration may be expected to gasp to see the inception chart. It is truly a most unusual moment amongst the general background of these unusual times.

More... There are two T squares. The Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Pluto arrangement is awesome and suggests the possibility of major cosmic tranformation occuring rather suddenly - new world order level. The Neptune Chiron conjuction on the Aquarius ascendant and with Sun and Moon connections speaks of our precise timeliness engaging with an insired healing vision for humanity.

The Moon passes into exact conjuction with Pluto during the ceremony on Thursday night.

You couldn't make this up, it's beyond anything even slightly reasonable. We will be forgiven for believing that this series of camps is our safe passage through the uncertainty of the 2012 phenomenon.

James Burgess

burgess Previously a management consultant and now a Sufi leader, healer and professional astrologer, James has 30-odd years of experience of group facilitation to his name, much of it abroad. He is a writer and lives deep in the countryside in Lithuania with his yoga-teacher wife, Nesta; together they are building a new healing and retreat centre, Green Haven. More
James is the founder of Unicorn Camps (1987), and co-founder of the world-renowned PTA International Camp, Oak Dragon Camps, and Campscene Directory. He is also the initiator of the Unicorn Land Trust, the Unicorn Peace Network charity and ‘Khanqah Salaam’ Sufi retreat centre.

He has pioneered various esoteric methods, which include developing several new approaches to healing work. One example is with astrodrama, which he has introduced to Russia and the Baltic States; another with his inventive personal growth methodology centred on the application of Sufi principles and Neuro Linguistic Programming to life coaching. He is possibly best known as the originator of the 7 Words Self-Realization Method, an innovative intuitive communication method.

As leader of a magical circle he is known for his clarity of mind, and he has a deep love and understanding of the importance of words and the power of clear thought. He has strength in the Air element.

Ros Briagha

Ros is a witch, and in her small village in the Welsh mountains she casts a spell that ensures she is well respected by villagers and authorities alike. Co-founder and erstwhile matriarch of the profoundly influential Oak Dragon Camps which is widely and justifiably acknowledged as the mother of many - even most - of the camps that exist today, she sits at the centre of a very active circle of marginal types who visit for guidance, comfort and inspiration. From her time protesting nuclear weapons, living at Greenham Common, she knows many wisdom-chants and stories and has learned the deepest sense of the power of the feminine to bring awareness to our need to love the land we depend upon.

Her experience is quite spectacular in the realm of Earth Mysteries, having taught for over 25 years, and her knowledge of Wicca and traditional method is deep and well-tested. She has organised covens, groups and meetings focusing dowsing, natural healing and ritual - yet her greater strength lies in her ability to bring a flash of insight to students and clients who seek wisdom through tarot and astrology.

Her home is a living statement of her craft, with artifacts, esoteric books, feathers and skins everywhere, and in the garden you will find a circle of 13 different trees that she planted, and a labyrinth used for group workings. Jane Flood

She lives in the heart of rural Somerset in a charmed cottage hidden in a magical woodland in where she will win the makings of our wands from a choice of woods that hold quite different magical properties. She is a rather special example of a type of person whose knowledge of the subtle processes of the craft goes unseen and unrecognised, which is a position long associated with a system whose adherents were never trusted or even permitted by the church-run state, and severely punished for their ‘heretic’ attitude. Nonetheless, witch she is.

In the years since Jane began storytelling she has acquired a word hoard of over 400 traditional tales from around the world. She is well known for her wicked sense of humour and deep sensitivity and her story-telling has been called "enchanting, compelling and bewitching" - she is well known throughout the UK and abroad.

Her power is feminine, knowing the depth of feeling we associate with Scorpio, so she holds the element of Water.

Barry Hoon

magick Barry has worked mainly with earth energies, western geomancy and labyrinths; he is an honorary life time member of The Labyrinth Society and a member of The British Society of Dowsers and The Geomancy Group. He has given public talks and workshops on Geopathic Stress, Dowsing and Geomancy. More
He spent 10 years in Glastonbury, partly as webmaster for the Isle of Avalon web site. Closely in touch with the essence of Chalice Well and the Tor energies, Barry had much to deal with in the matters of Portals, Gateways, Elementals and Dementors. In offering healing, he works in finding balance and harmony by clearing geopathic stress, which arises from our being surrounded by a full spectrum of energetic frequencies: radio waves, microwaves, magnetism, electricity and so on.

Major influences have come from studying with the celebrated American teacher Sig Lonegren and the technique of Deviceless Dowsing from Billy Gawn, a past Chairman of the BSD Earth Energies Group. His own web-based Mind Mirror method encapsulates much of his healing experience into a subtle psychological study to help people deal with life issues with deeper wisdom and insight.
